South African Team takes Gold at 100km World Championships

The ultra-marathon world championship took place at Los Alcazares, Spain on Sunday. Team South Africa has done us proud by taking the team Gold medal. The highlight was a 2nd place showing by Bongumusa Mthembu (the 2014 Comrades champion) who ran a time of 6:24:05, a new South African record.

Here are some other team highlights

  • Gift Kelehe (who won Comrades in 2015) finished the race in ninth place with a time of 6:43:00
  • Reigning Comrades Marathon ‘down’ run record holder David Gatebe was 12th in 6:44:34

Note: top three athletes from a country to finish count towards the team event.

Other performances:

  • Rufus Photo ended 19th in 6:52:43
  • Ludwick Mamabolo was unable to finish the race
